PE and PVC lay-flat hose for mainlines and manifolds, including pre-installed outlet versions.
Layflat hose does two jobs: it carries water from the pump to the block as a temporary mainline, and it feeds drip tape or thinwall dripline as a manifold with an outlet at every row. Rivulis and Irritec each offer a blank PVC hose for transport and a PE version with outlets already in it; Netafim's FlexNet Flexible Pipe is a polypropylene outlet pipe for the same manifold job. Pick by working pressure first, then by how the outlets are made.
Blank PVC layflat or PE layflat with outlets: which do I need?
Blank PVC layflat is the transport line. Rivulis H5000 Layflat and Pro-Flat Layflat and Irritec's FlexiFlat LayFlat Hose (PVC) carry the highest working pressures in this category, run up to 8" in diameter and have no outlets, so they suit the leg from the pump to the block or a submain at full system pressure. Any outlets you punch and fit yourself, which is where outlet leaks start.
PE layflat with pre-installed outlets is the manifold. Rivulis H6000 PE Layflat and H6500 PE Layflat, Irritec's FlexiFlat PE Layflat Hose and Netafim FlexNet arrive with an outlet roughly every 20" to 80"; the Rivulis PE lines also offer custom spacing. Lay it across the bed heads and plug a drip tape or thinwall lateral into each outlet. Rivulis puts H6000 at up to 64% lighter than equivalent PVC.
The trade-off is pressure: outlet versions are rated for manifold pressure, about 14.5 to 36 psi here, not pump pressure. Measure bed centers before ordering and check the outlet type: FlexNet uses welded 1/2" female-threaded outlets, while the Rivulis PE lines connect to seamless thinwall laterals up to 25 mil wall.
What has to be right on site, and where do layflat runs fail?
Where a line is rated by size, the rating falls as diameter grows; Irritec's FlexiFlat LayFlat Hose (PVC) is 70 psi at 2" to 4" but 40 psi at 8". Outlets lower the rating again: Irritec's FlexiFlat PE Layflat Hose is 35 psi blank and 25 psi with outlets. Put a pressure reducing valve ahead of any pump-fed outlet manifold, and close valves slowly so surge does not split a seam.
The failures that repeat: outlet hose run at transport pressure, a manifold ordered before measuring bed centers, fittings that do not match the hose, and a truck across a pressurized hose. Irritec rates its FlexiFlat PE for farm equipment to drive over; Netafim says the same of FlexNet unpressurized. Rocky ground or dragged hose argues for Pro-Flat's embedded webbing.
Rivulis has the broadest range: H5100 blue standard and H5200 red high-pressure PVC, Pro-Flat for heavy duty, H6000 at up to 64% lighter than PVC and H6500 seamless with standard fittings. Both Irritec FlexiFlat lines use 3-ply polyester yarn. Netafim's FlexNet is recyclable polypropylene with welded threaded outlets. Request a quote with flow, run length and bed spacing.
